Focus Features announced today it has set a limited release date for Alexander Payne’s upcoming comedy The Holdovers. The studio will begin rolling out the film on November 10, 2023 before going wide on Wednesday, November 22nd ahead of Thanksgiving Day.
From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, The Holdovers follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at an elite New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them -- a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) -- and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).
The Holdovers is directed by Payne from a screenplay by David Hemingson.
The film was produced by Mark Johnson, Bill Block and David Hemingson. Chris Stinson, Tom Williams, Andrew Golov and Thom Zadra served as executive producers.
The Holdovers stars Paul Giamatti alongside Da’Vine Joy Randolph and newcomer Dominic Sessa.
Focus will release The Holdovers in the US with Universal Pictures International handling international distribution.
