The critically acclaimed coming-of-age film Dìdi (弟弟) screened at the 2024 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film & TV Festival last night. Writer-director Sean Wang; cast member Raul Dial; producers Carlos López Estrada, Josh Peters, and Valerie Bush; and executive producers Chris Quintos Cathcart, Dave A. Liu, and Robina Riccitiello all attended the event at the Stateside Theater in Austin, Texas.
The film was slated under the "festival favorite" category. Last year, Wang's Academy Award-nominated documentary short, Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó, won the SXSW Short Documentary Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award.
Starring Izaac Wang, Joan Chen, Shirley Chen, and Chang Li Hua, Dìdi (弟弟) is a funny, irreverent, and affecting ode to first-generation teenagers navigating the joy and chaos of adolescence.
SXSW summarized the coming-of-age film: "In 2008, during the last month of summer before high school begins, an impressionable 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy learns what his family can’t teach him: how to skate, how to flirt, and how to love your mom."
The Texas premiere comes off the heels of the film earning acclaim at this year's Sundance Film Festival; it won both the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award and the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Best Ensemble Cast.
Dìdi (弟弟) will premiere in limited theaters across the country on July 26, 2024.
